Administrative Measures for Registration of Formula Foods for Special Medical Purposes released on 7 March 2016

On 7 March 2016, the Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) issued the Administrative Measures for Registration of Formula Foods for Special Medical Purposes (“Measures”). The Measures will be effective from 1 July 2016.

In the Measures, formula foods for special medical purposes refers to formula foods produced to meet special nutritional demands of people who are suffering from certain diseases (such as eating disorders, digestive disorders and metabolic disorders). According to the Measures, the formula foods produced and sold in China and exported to China need to be registered with and approved by the FDA.

In addition, the Measures stipulate registration procedures, registration time limits and other matters relating to formula foods for special medical purposes.
